🗺️ Trip Planning
What is the best month for an Alaska cruise?
July is the most popular month — warmest temperatures, most daylight, best wildlife activity. June is a close second with fewer crowds. May and September offer lower prices and thinner crowds but more rain and colder temps.
How long should my Alaska cruise be?
7 nights is the standard Alaska cruise and gives you 4–5 port days plus scenic cruising. 10–14 night itineraries add more remote ports (Sitka, Wrangell, Hubbard Glacier). Anything shorter than 7 nights skips too much.
Is a one-way or roundtrip Alaska cruise better?
One-way (Southbound or Northbound) covers more distance and adds Glacier Bay for most itineraries. Roundtrip from Seattle or San Francisco is cheaper and avoids the hassle of flights to two cities. If budget allows, one-way wins on scenery.
Do I need a passport for an Alaska cruise?
Closed-loop cruises (same US departure and return port) technically only require a birth certificate + photo ID for US citizens. But a passport is strongly recommended — if you miss the ship in a Canadian port, you need one to fly home.
⚓ Ports & Shore Days
Which Alaska cruise ports are tendered vs. docked?
Docked ports: Juneau, Ketchikan, Skagway, Haines, Wrangell, Sitka (new dock 2023), Seward. Tender ports: Icy Strait Point (ferry tender), some Glacier Bay sailings. Docked is always easier — no tender line, no wait.
How many hours do ships spend in each port?
Typical port times: Juneau 5–8 hrs, Ketchikan 4–6 hrs, Skagway 6–8 hrs, Sitka 4–6 hrs, Icy Strait Point 5–6 hrs. Tracy Arm Fjord days are scenic cruising only — no stop. Always check your specific itinerary.
Can I leave the ship on my own in every port?
Yes — in every Alaska port you can walk off the ship and explore independently. You are never required to book a ship tour. The only exception is Glacier Bay, which is scenic cruising only (no shore access).
🚁 Shore Excursions
Should I book excursions through the cruise line or independently?
Ship-sold excursions carry a 20–40% markup. The main reason to book through the ship: guaranteed ship-wait if your tour runs late (worth it for helicopter tours and Tracy Arm). For whale watching, tramways, and DIY glacier hikes, book independently and save significantly.
What is the best excursion in Alaska overall?
Depends on budget. Best value: Mendenhall Glacier DIY hike (Juneau, ~$30 bus). Best splurge: Helicopter glacier + dog sledding (Juneau, $500+). Best bang for dollar: Whale watching in Juneau ($150, 95%+ sighting rate). Best unique experience: White Pass Railway (Skagway, $130).
How far in advance should I book Alaska excursions?
Helicopter glacier tours sell out 60–90 days in advance in peak season. Whale watching and popular tours sell out 30–60 days out. Book as soon as your cruise is confirmed. Walking tours and tramways can usually be done walk-up.
🚢 Ships & Cruise Lines
Which cruise line is best for Alaska?
Princess Cruises and Holland America have the deepest Alaska itineraries and the most experienced Alaska crews. For first-timers on a budget, Norwegian and Carnival offer solid Alaska itineraries. For small-ship wilderness, UnCruise and Alaska Dream Cruises are in a different category entirely.
Which side of the ship is best for Alaska scenery?
Port side (left) for Northbound cruises. Starboard side (right) for Southbound. If you're doing roundtrip from Seattle, port side is better for the Inside Passage going up, starboard coming back. A balcony on either side beats an inside cabin.
Are large ships or small ships better for Alaska?
Large ships offer more amenities, entertainment, and lower per-night costs. Small ships (under 200 passengers) reach ports large ships can't — Wrangell, Hyder, Kake — and can anchor in wilderness bays. If seeing remote Alaska is the goal, small ship wins. If this is your first cruise, large ship is more forgiving.
🎒 Packing & Clothing
What should I pack for an Alaska cruise?
Non-negotiables: packable rain jacket, waterproof shoes or rubber boots, base layers, fleece mid-layer, sunscreen (UV is strong on glaciers), binoculars. Optional but useful: trekking poles, dry bags for tender days. Formal wear is optional on most mainstream lines.
Is it cold on an Alaska cruise in summer?
July average highs: Juneau 63°F, Ketchikan 64°F, Skagway 65°F. Evenings and rainy days drop to the low 50s. On glaciers and open water it feels 10–15°F colder than the air temp. Pack layers, not a single heavy coat.
